Friends of the Cedar River Watershed (The Friends) is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization incorporated in 1996 and dedicated to the protection and restoration of the Cedar River/Lake Washington Watershed and all the communities within its boundaries.
The Friends is working to:
- Ensure the long-term stewardship of the watershed
- Provide and promote tangible and data-driven environmental education, especially for young people.
- Educate the public about the importance of enhancing and restoring our home watershed.
We offer innovative opportunities for people, young and old, to improve the ecological health of the watershed in which we live. Through our our base of volunteers, community leaders, and educators, we empower people to take practical steps to make our home watershed sustainable for people, fish, and wildlife.
Local Councils/Elected Officials
The Friends sits on the Cedar River Council (CRC) and the WRIA 8 Salmon Recovery Council (SRC). The CRC is a group of lower Cedar River basin stakeholders who communicate with King County council on river management issues. The CRC focuses on water quality, fish and wildlife habitat, recreational access, and flood management. The ultimate goal of the CRC is to provide greater outreach to the citizens who live in the Cedar River basin in order to engender a sense of ownership and stewardship of the river and watershed.
The Salmon Recovery Council is a group of community leaders from each of the 27 jurisdictions that are located in the Lake Washington/Cedar/Sammamish (WRIA 8) Watershed. This group oversees the progress of the WRIA 8 Chinook Salmon Conservation Plan.
