Education Center Hours

Tuesday through Friday     Nov through March     10 AM to 4 PM

The Cedar River Watershed Education Center is free and open to the public. This award-winning facility has walking trails, exhibits, indoor activities, a gift shop and plenty of parking. Come explore what "sustainable architecture" looks like! Bring your family out to your "back yard Education Center" any time of year. Call (206) 733-9421 for more information.

Fourth Tuesdays     7 pm to 9 pm              Cedar River Council Meetings

The Cedar River Council offers an excellent opportunity to be informed about the Cedar River management issues watershed-wide. Every month, specialists come to speak to the council about everything from flood control to the Growth Management Act to the Puget Sound Partnership. Join community members and stakeholders for this month's meeting held at the Maplewood Golf Course, 4050 Maple Valley Hwy. For more information about the Cedar River Council, click here.

Saturday, May 10     9 AM to 1 PM     Habitat Restoration at Cavanaugh Pond

Join us and REI for a day of streamside habitat restoration at Cavanaugh Pond. This area is home to beavers, spawning salmon, and birds, but due to its infestation of blackberries and other invasive weeds, it is struggling to remain viable habitat. Celebrate spring by pitching in to help out your local watershed. We’ll clear invasive weeds and spread fabric to prepare a site for a fall tree-planting project.

Ages: Adults, Youth 12+ are welcome with a parent or guardian.

Location: Meet at Cavanaugh Pond in Maple Valley. Directions will be provided to registered participants.

Saturday, June 7    9 AM to 1 PM      Ivy Removal at Dorre Don

Remove invasive English Ivy to save a native forest! Beautiful forest habitat in Maple Valley is being choked out by an ivy invasion. Please join us for a half-day of chopping ivy from the trees and the ground so that wildlife habitat in the Cedar River Watershed can survive and flourish.

Ages: Adults, Youth 12+ are welcome with a parent or guardian.

Saturday, Sept 6      9:30 AM to 3 PM     Botanical Inventory in the Watershed

Join us and Seattle Public Utilities’ Botanist Clay Antieau for an autumn botanical survey. Venture into the protected watershed to collect, identify, and press scientific specimens that will be deposited permanently at the University of Washington Herbarium. Prior botanical knowledge is welcome, but not required. Training provided. If you have ever wanted to discover the miraculous world of plants, this event is a golden and green opportunity! Space limited.

Saturday, Oct 11        9:30 AM to 3 PM     Tree Planting in the Watershed

Join us for a day of tree planting in the protected Cedar River Municipal Watershed. We’ll go behind the gates of this city-owned wildlife preserve to restore wildlife habitat by planting several species of native trees and shrubs. Autumn is one of the best times to visit the Watershed, so sign up before the leaves turn yellow. Space limited.
