Flooding

Be Prepared!

Autumn rains have arrived in the Cedar River Watershed and water levels are starting rise. The Friends want to ensure that homeowners along the river have the resources you need when floods come this year.

We know that the flooding of 2009 hit many people hard. All of us who have a stake in the Cedar River Watershed need to work together this winter to be responsive to  the needs of the people along the river.

General Information

King County provides general flood preparedness instructions, but it's always a good idea to talk to your neighbors to find out local flood conditions and effective local flood control methods.

River and flood information is always available by calling King County's Flood Warning Center at 206.296.8200 or 800.945.9263.

You can also sign up for automated alerts of flooding conditions. You will need to decide at what flood stage you want to be alerted (see below), and how you want to be notified (phone, text message, email, etc).

River Level

The readings below are in cubic feet per second (CFS) at the gage below Landsburg Dam

Cedar Stage I
1000 cfs
Cedar Stage II* 2800 cfs Jones Road near 156th may overtop
Cedar Stage III 3500 cfs Lower Dorre Don and Byres Road may overtop
Cedar Stage IV** 4200 cfs
Some residential areas may experience dangerous high velocities, debris flows and home flooding. Portions of SR 169 may overtop and close.

*people in lower lying areas will probably want to set alerts for Stage II
**Extreme Flooding

Check USGS Gage Readings:

  • Below Landsburg The "below Landsburg" gage will tell you what is happening just below the dam.  It's about a mile below Landsburg Park east of Maple Valley.
